. >> people across the country, we just heard from the mayor of bridgeport, connecticut, a few minutes ago, a lot of folks trying to get guns off the streets right now. two rocket launchers were part of the 2,000 guns that were part of the buyback a few days ago. is that a better method than putting more guns in tnoticein schools? >> i doubt the rocket launchers are legal right now. the best solution would be to have a police officer in each school. and we have had a program like that for many years. it's called school resource officers, they not only help protect against violence, but they teach a course or two in police work in leadership. they make friends with the kids that are there every day. >> what about the cost of that? what about the cost of that? >> that's the problem, we only had it in perhaps 10% of the schools and when the fiscal crisis hit in 2008, the legislatu legislature had to cut back from that. so it's in a small percentage of the schools. so my proposal is second best. the preference is to have the school resource officers in the schools, that would be the best solut

it is something else. i think we have seen that kind of regionalization of laws. connecticut had an assault weapons ban that didn't prevent this tragedy from happening and didn't outlaw the kind of gun you would want to be outlawed for that kind of tragedy. i don't know that the federal government will be able to slice and dice. it will be very difficult and very close if they are able to get something done. i know there is going to be a big push on it. the president is going to speak on it. they will have to marshall all of their good will after this to try to figure out what can be done. >> all right. thanks. we'll see you later on in the show. >>> as the nation's most powerful gun lobby group doubles down for the call for armed guards at schools we are learning more about adam lanza. the washington post today has a quote from his former first grade teacher who says there was a quiet depth to him that i couldn't penetrate. let's bring in national political reporter and bob franken, a syndicated columnist. welcome to both of you. before we get started i want to play you more on the intervi

tragedy at newtown, connecticut and the picture, the first grade picture has been released and just drives home the incredible loss and tragedy. this was one classroom and now the name, vicky soto's class, the 27-year-old teacher who had the zest for life who was killed. and many cite her as a hero and half of the class was saved and the story goes, we don't know, this is reported by six and seven year olds and the story was vague, she apparently hid them all in a closet and when she was killed, when she confronted the gunman and told them that she had sent them to the auditorium, she was killed and when some of the kids heard the gunshots, they ran out and they were killed. >> clayton: and olivia engel, apparently this photo was released by olivia's mother and appeared in the new york post this morning and as we continue to talk about what unfolded that day and of course, you look at the horrible images and many people were reminded what happened and unfolded in columbine, of course. then on friday, this was exacerbated this discussion about gun control and whether or not there should be

? >> at this point, what isn't behind it, superstorm sandy, heartbreaking tragedy in connecticut last week and now the fiscal cliff standstill that is actually cutting consumer confidence. i think all of those are playing a role. a lot of data firms are cutting back on shopping outlooks for the holiday season. i'm not too worried. we saw this similar, and relatively robust black friday sales, a lull in the following weeks and a surge in the last couple of days before christmas. we'll see the same thing with the last-minute shoppers piling into stores. >> if folks have to shop until they drop the past couple of days, which big-name stores will be open 24/7 before christmas? >> toys r us and macy's, the surprise, mcdonald's is pushing franchisees to stay open on christmas day. they apparently think people will want big macs. >> surprising. >>> the cost of american coins is going up. how does the treasury propose to cut the cost? >> apparently it takes money to make money. the u.s. mint released a two-year report earlier this week, and pennies and nickels cost more than two times their value to make.

if you have a gift or donation that you want to give to the grieving families in newtown, connecticut. hold on to them. the connecticut town is asking people to stop giving. officials say the overflow has been heart warming since the tragedy, but left 20 kids and seven adults dead, but they are overwhelmed by the volume. are they offering an alternative plan? >> generally, yes. specifically, no. you stood in the town square and you saw the teddy bears and all of the candles and the angels and many sent 26 of them because of the number of people killed. it's just too much. they're asking that instead of sending more to the town, that they donate them to organizations and the thousands of children around the cocountry that would be comforted by a teddy bear. they have a warehouse full of these teddy bears and the cards and the angels and all of the trinkets being sent in. they are walking a difficult line because they don't want to appear to be ungrateful, but they want to get back to a level of normalcy. >> what do you do with all of this? the town is not big enough to absorb that. the

, and then you can see, we have four to six inch bes for much of new york state as well as into connecticut and new york. not necessarily new york city getting as hard-hit with this storm. several inches expected. what's fastcinating when talkin about a nor'easter system, as it develops off the coast, depending where the low pressure is centered, that will determine how much snow cities like boston and providence get. but the latest computer modelling are saying we could see six inches or more for the boston area. that's why a winter storm warning is now in place. so the snow will begin later on today and continue through the night, and it may be something you have to plow or shovel out by the time we get to tomorrow morning. we'll be watching this very closely. you can see that the winter weather advisory is a little less for the cape, because you have that ocean moisture and ocean temperatures a little bit milder and that influences whether you get snow or rain. again, this looks like a powerful storm. here's the computer model showing we could see over a foot of snow in parts of massachu
